We have many words for change because we don’t understand it and we’re not good at it.

“When you do something… you should do it completely, like a good bonfire.
You should not be a smoky fire. You should burn yourself completely.”

Shunryu Suzuki, from Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind

The domain of change we understand is only the beginning of what change can be. We don’t understand its extent or the boundaries of what can change in us. There are dragons at the limits of the changes we can accomplish. We need to learn to speak their language…

My usual inclination as a therapist is to let people blow themselves up. I don’t need to wait around. In most cases, I’m being asked to prevent change. Wouldn’t you want your problems solved with the least amount of change? Or would you take this opportunity to upgrade everything?
